Why Do Japanese Homes Have Storm Shutters?

When looking at homes in Japan, you may notice shutters installed outside many windows.
They are very common in Japanese homes, but some of our international clients may not be familiar with them.
So, why do Japanese homes have shutters?
■ Protection During Typhoons and Strong Winds
Japan experiences typhoons and strong winds, which can cause flying objects to hit and damage windows.
Closing the shutters can help protect the glass during severe weather.
■ Extra Security
Shutters can also provide an additional layer of security, especially for windows on the first floor.
■ Privacy and Light Control
They are useful for blocking outside views and can also make a room darker when needed.
■ Different Types of Shutters
Older Japanese homes often have traditional sliding storm shutters called amado (雨戸).
Newer homes commonly have roll-down shutters, and some properties even have electric shutters.
When I inspect a pre-owned home, I don’t only check whether shutters are installed. I also check whether they open and close properly.
It may seem like a small detail, but when you’re actually living in Japan, features like these can make a home safer and more comfortable.

日本の住宅を見ていると、窓の外側に「雨戸」や「シャッター」が付いている家をよく見かけます。
日本では昔から馴染みのある設備ですが、海外のお客様をご案内していると、こうした日本特有の住宅設備についてご説明する機会があります。
では、雨戸やシャッターにはどんな役割があるのでしょうか？
■ 台風や強風から窓を守る
日本では台風や強風の際、物が飛んできて窓ガラスが割れてしまう可能性があります。
雨戸やシャッターを閉めることで、窓ガラスを飛来物から守る役割があります。
■ 防犯対策
特に1階の窓にシャッターや雨戸があると、外部から窓へ直接アクセスしにくくなるため、防犯面での安心感にもつながります。
■ プライバシーや遮光
道路や隣家に面した窓では、雨戸やシャッターを閉めることで外からの視線を遮ることができます。
また、室内を暗くしたいときの遮光にも便利です。
■ 住宅によってタイプもさまざま
中古住宅では昔ながらの横にスライドさせる雨戸を見かけることがありますが、比較的新しい住宅では上下に開閉するシャッタータイプも多く見られます。
電動シャッターが設置されている住宅もあります。
私が中古住宅を確認するときは、「付いているかどうか」だけではなく、実際にきちんと開閉できるかも確認するようにしています。
一見すると小さな設備ですが、日本で実際に生活することを考えると、こうした部分も住まい選びのポイントのひとつです。
