Don’t Judge a Home by Its Age
Hello!
This is Norika, your Tuesday blog contributor.
When looking for a home in Japan, many people check the age of the property first.
You may see a home that is 20 or 30 years old and immediately think, “That’s too old.”
But after visiting many pre-owned homes, I’ve learned that the age of a house doesn’t always tell you its true condition.
Some older homes have been very well maintained. The kitchen and bathroom may have been renovated, the exterior may have been repainted, and the interior may still be in great condition.
On the other hand, even a newer home can sometimes need repairs depending on how it has been maintained.
That’s why it’s important to look beyond the year the house was built.
When viewing a property, we should also consider:
How well the home has been maintained
Previous renovations or repairs
The condition of the roof and exterior
The condition of the kitchen and bathrooms
Floors, walls, windows, and doors
Any signs of moisture or water damage
An older home can sometimes become a great home with just a few updates.
So, if you find a property you like, don’t dismiss it simply because of its age.
The actual condition of the home is just as important as the number of years it has been standing.
If you’re interested in buying a home in Japan, we’re happy to help you understand not only what you can see in the listing, but also what you should look for when viewing the property.
